Graphic Design
Graphic Design Summary
While attending Calvin College I was introduced to graphic design by my photography professor. To be honest, I had no intentions of studying design, because I believed I had previously discovered my calling in engineering and then photography. However, she highly recommended that I enroll in the course, citing the similarities between photography and design. This also allowed me to develop my attention to detail and Photoshop skills in more depth.
My attitude quickly evolved the further we dove into the design process. Soon I found myself torn between two growing passions, but they complimented each other very well and I was able to combine my skills and find my path once again.
Conveniently at this time Calvin was in the process of creating a new degree called “Business of Art” which later morphed into the graphic design program. I quickly jumped on board with the chance to follow the path which included graphic design, photography, and marketing coursework. Graphic design was something I not only enjoyed but was becoming skilled at as well. I also enrolled in an honors course, where I had the opportunity to become a classroom assistant for the introductory students in Calvin's Interim courses. Design had officially won my interest. Also, now that Calvin required marketing classes for the program I quickly learned the reason behind the design. It sought to develop the art of emotional and logical design process and reveal the battle between art and sales.
I would never trade my education at Calvin for anything, as liberal arts degrees give a whole new perspective of how and why we create something. Not only can I create a design, but unlike my fellow BA graphic design graduates I can see the reason and thought explained by marketing. My professor said it best, other students can just create what they are told, but you will be able to see why and have a better link into how to create that connection all designs strive for.
I have been a freelance designer since 2011, which has included both web, print, and digital designs, as well as my work at Calvin College. In the photo links above you will find all my design creations.
If you have any questions or inquiries regarding my work, don't hesitate to contact me and I would enjoy the opportunity to speak with you and discuss them further.
